49.2% of children in Romania are at risk of poverty or social exclusion

New statistics published

New 2016 statistics published by Eurostat, the EU's office of statistics, show Romania to have to highest percentage of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion. At 49.2% that is almost half of the children in Romania.


In total 24.8 million children in the European Union, or 26.4% of the population, aged 0-17 were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2016. Overall in the EU there has been a decrease in the proportion of children at risk of poverty or social exclusion over the years, however Romania has seen an increase, 38% to 49.2%, and now sits at the top of the charts.
