FARA Foundation is a registered charity in the UK and Romania, founded in 1991 to support the poorest and most vulnerable children and families in Romania.
Jane Nicholson founded the charity to transform the lives of children suffering a life of neglect and abuse in Romania’s notorious state institutions. The word fara means “without” in Romanian and the charity was created to provide a family for those without.
FARA reaches out to Romania’s poorest families, the marginalised and excluded in society, meeting the needs of children with disabilities and young people at risk of homelessness. Giving security and love, fulfilling lives, rebuilding futures and spreading hope.
Our charity is based on Christian values of justice and dignity, welcoming people of all faiths and none. FARA collaborates across all sections of society to build relationships and partnerships, striving to build a just society serving the common good.
Our mission is to transform the lives of marginalized children and young people from Romania’s poorest communities. Providing a loving family, specialist therapy, access to education and training and preventing homelessness.
Our vision is of a world in which children and young people grow up with freedom and dignity in a loving, protective environment, experiencing fulfilled lives whatever their ability.
Our values underpin all our work and are shared by all those involved in carrying out our mission both in the UK and Romania.
We act with kindness and compassion.
We believe the deepest need of children and young people is to experience genuine love as part of a stable family, where spiritual, social and material needs are generously nurtured.
We respect the human dignity of every person.
We promote inclusiveness, believing every child and young person, whatever their faith or none, has a part to play in society and deserves love and respect as a uniquely gifted person.
We believe in practical hands-on care.
We aim to serve the broadest number of people to the detriment of no one, with a strong preference for serving and enabling the poorest and vulnerable in society.
We strive to build a just society.
We believe in justice for all, where everyone is able to live fulfilled lives regardless of their ability. We seek to be open to change and give a voice to those we serve.
We responsibly collaborate across all sections of society.
We build relationships and partnerships to access services, ensuring our actions are socially and environmentally conscious.
We strive to be a best practice organisation.
We believe in good stewardship of resources entrusted to us, being open and accountable to all our supporters. We strive to keep our administration cost to a minimum.
