Ten years of tackling rural poverty

June 1st had a special significance for FARA’s staff and children in northeast Romania. As well as being the World Day of the Child it was also the tenth anniversary of the groundbreaking Tackling Poverty through Education programme.

To mark the occasion a reunion took place between past and present beneficiaries. There was plenty to talk about. Many of the children and young adults had experienced harsh upbringings and had shouldered heavy responsibilities at a young age. But all had happy memories as well – for example, their first days at school supported by FARA, help with homework, tasty school meals, not to mention their success as they moved on to secondary education.

One feature of school life which made a special impression was music. Thanks to volunteer music teachers many children learnt to play the drum, trumpet and accordion. Some even formed a music group which is now in great demand at local festivals.

A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who has helped FARA over the past decade: staff, volunteers and members of local churches and councils. Thanks to their dedication nearly 200 children each year can look forward to a brighter future.
