An unforgettable weekend of celebrations

Children and young people from FARA's projects across Romania have joined staff and supporters in Bucharest for a wonderful weekend of celebrations to mark FARA's 25th Anniversary, paid for entirely through the generosity of sponsoring organisations.

Coaches and trains brought children from projects in Suceava County to the Romanian capital - a journey of some 300 miles. There they enjoyed a weekend of special treats. Highlights included visits to a wide-screen cinema, fun at the city's natural history museum and a break at Bucharest's famous Carturesti bookstore, which donated souvenir books to each child.

Saturday evening saw children, young people and staff from all of FARA's Romanian projects together with many supporters (some of whom had travelled from the UK) gather for a celebration Mass at the the Congregation of Jesus Convent.

This was followed by a get-together at the nearby Foyer centre, where the children entertained guests with traditional singing and dancing. Speaking at the event, Jane Nicholson, Founder and Chairman of FARA said:

'I hope and pray that the inspiration that I gave to others to heal the lives of so many children will continue to grow. FARA is a work of love and love endures.

The children and young people in FARA today area witness to the kindness and dedication of our staff and volunteers, and I thank them from my heart. I ask you all to support our work in any way you can to give more children hope for the future.'

The grand finale was a Sunday morning ballet performance of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Bucharest Children's Opera. After a spellbinding hour of music and dazzling dances children were treated to a backstage tour - courtesy of renowned Romanian soprano Felicia Felipe, the Opera's founder.

British Ambassador to Romania Paul Brummel was also in attendance with his wife and young son, as was FARA's Patron in Romania, Princess Marina Sturdza.

Reflecting on the events, Jane Nicholson said:

'It was a weekend to remember in so many ways. We wanted to make it a celebration of all that we stand for, so we gathered as an extended family, putting the children and young people at the heart of it all. There was such joy on their faces! Thank you, thank you to everyone for their support and for helping FARA bring 25 years of love and hope to so many of Romania's poorest families.'
